Acetic acid (systematically named ethanoic acid, CH_3COOH) is a colorless, pungent, acidic liquid commonly known as the main component of vinegar (4–6%). It is widely used for producing plastics, pharmaceuticals, textiles, and as a food preservative (E260). Industrially, it is primarily produced through the catalytic methanol carbonylation process. While dilute vinegar is safe, concentrated "glacial" acetic acid is highly corrosive and causes severe skin burns and eye damage.
